Brain-Computer Interface

Brain-Computer Interface (BCI), one of the hottest research topics in the 21st century, has been focusing on the development of communication tools for patients with motor disabilities. We are working on two novel issues in BCI: Brain state transfer and therapeutic neuromodulation for psychiatric disorders.

We recorded and analyzed neuronal activities (local field potential, LFP) in the rat amygdala and auditory thalamus during fear memory recall, decoding the brain state of learned fear using linear and nonlinear time series analysis. This technique can be utilized to transferring one¡¯s brain state to other subjects or machines such as robots, realizing direct communication between biological intelligences (brain) and artificial intelligences. We are in collaboraton with Hubo lab. and developing a wireless transmission chip for robot-brain communication.

The other important topic is a therapeutic brain stimulation, especially for treating posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We are developing the magnetic brain stimulation technique diminishing pathological fear memory with animal model experiment in collaboration with M.D. Ph. D. Chae in the Catholic university (Psychiatry Dept., St. Mary¡¯s hospital). We reported enhanced fear memory extinction using transcranial magnetic stimulation during extinction learning in rats. We are also investigating the abnormality in the brain activity of PTSD patients with Dr. Chae using fMRI and EEG experiments.
